Knots and Taps and Rivers of Words

It can happen that you tie a knot somewhere in yourself. A knot in a fluid pipe in your body. Perhaps in your brain. It can happen that you then tie a second knot to block out the first knot. And then a third knot to hide the second. And on it goes. Before you know it your brain and body is in a knot and it's hard to untie. When your body's in a knot like this, it's hard to write. Think of it as a closed water tap. Words don't flow. To fix the tap you need to go in and untie the knots. You have to start at the latest knot and work your way back to the first knot. Once all the knots are untied, the words will start to flow. Slowly at first but then gradually faster. Until finally you have whole river systems of words to choose from. Whole deltas. To pull out the words you have to have readers and listeners. And their eyes and ears help to pull the words from you. Sometimes it happens that people are discouraged from writing. Either by a parent, a sibling, a friend. Or indeed by a government. But a writer's words can only be kept inside for so long before they have to burst out into the world. Their rivers of words sustain others. They help to explain the world. Our storytellers help us to shape experience. They help us to mould the world. Storytellers should be treasured. And defended. Not persecuted and silenced. They should be encouraged to open their taps and let their rivers of words flow.

Elizabeth On The Bathroom Floor *

Lying there. On a wet patch. Taps dripping overhead. The gentle buzz of the lightbulb echoing over the bathroom tiles. She floats away into a different world. A diffident world away from this one. In her dream she is surrounded by green fields and meadows. A blue-grey sea crashes into the shore. She cannot remember now what it felt like. Her memories are visual. Images. She moves her hip slightly, readjusts her body line and then settles back down onto the rug. The light stabs her eyes. But she cannot move near enough to the switch to adjust it. Her muscles are inert. The full weight of the floor pushes back up into her. She feels its cold hardness against her bones and joints. But still it's far away. Over there. Her body stretches. Time moves away. She is still lying on the floor. The bath water still steaming hot. The soap on its metal gauze stand. The shampoo bottle's lid belly up on the side of the porcelain tub. Her numb thoughts register only vaguely. Distantly. From across a deep ravine. She tries to look around her but her neck won't move. Her eyes are open but motionless and staring off at an angled chiseled metal leg of the bathtub. The mist hangs over the bathroom walls. Mirrors clouded. Beads of sweaqt roll over her forehead and fall to the floor. She is naked. Her lilac slippers, patterned yellow flowers beaming, peek from beneath a crumpled mass of clothing. Pyjamas. Undershirts. Panties. The bathroom door closed but unlocked. A soft cold breeze from underneath the door joins up with a slight current overhead which filters in from the airholes up high in the corner of the room. Patterns of steam spiral outward and fall back inward in its wake. There was a time once when she would have registered an impulse to move. But that has long passed. She has since fallen deeper into the illness. Fallen further away from the surface of her life. Into this abyss. From which she can barely conceive herself moving out of. It has so soaked into her being. She has absorbed more of its glumness. Its moss-witheres leaves and roots beneath its damp soil. She breathes in its dampness. Its hungry earth. It calls her down. It pulls her in. Even the back of her eyeballs heavy with its weight as the side of her head leans more into the floor. Outside, beyoned her building, life chirrups on. Cars on the streets below the curve of the ridgeline shift bodies over the blurred tarmac, gravel and concrete whizzing by beneath. Aeroplanes overhead line the sky with exhaust plumes. The cavorting and cajoling interweaved motions of buzzing life beneath the heavy red brightness of a distant star. Warmth absorbed and emanating. Still in the bathroom she lies. Shape and form descending. Further down. Gravity increasing by the minute. Soon the phones will begin ringing as then the the caring hands will approach. Embracing her again. Lifting her up away from the alluring loam. The fertilized soil. The worms and beetles beneath. As then the spotlit beams of light are shone at her retinas. as her sunken drooping arms are scooped up clumsily and poured onto the couch again. As freshly-folded blankets are brought out again from the top shelf of the linen cabinet in the hall. As her mouth is opened and liquid falls past her inert throat. Tablets follow the liquid's descent. A cold metallic pinprick in her vein. A surge of chemicals into her brain and body. She begins to see bodies again. Sounds of rushed panic enter her ears. Human voices. She registers the pressure of warm bodies. Hands gripping the back of head. The open front door. The silent ambulance outside. Its whirring light. She is scooped up and whittled away. Tucked into the care. Wrapped in its clinical warmth. The house lights are switched on. The doors locked. She floats over concrete, tarmac and gravel into a hospital courtyard. The lab coats flutter and flit beside her as she is wheeled to ward. More smells. Lessened sounds. Darkness. Light.

Bodies hurtling through time

The underground train doors open and then close behind her. She's in the heat and rumble now. Swinging and lurching through city tunnels. Then silence. A swoosh. The train doors slide open. She's flowing out now. Up and through. Propelled along. Then daylight. Sidewalks slip by. Bodies float aside. She falls into a room. The walls hug her. The city waits outside the door. Beyond the walls. She stands in an open space. Beneath and in front of her a long carpeted stairway. Her heartbeats in the silence. Her breath echoes. A shiver passes through her body now. She twitches. Regains her composure. Up the stairs. Along the wooden passageway. To a window. A silent city scene. Filtered through glass and net curtaining. She watches. Waits. Dimly at first but steadily louder an aeroplane's roar far overhead. She imagines herself sitting in a window seat looking down at the city below. Gone. Then the room returns. The city again around her. Surrounding her. Through the window. A taxi ferries by. The driver taps on the accelerator with minute movements of leg and foot muscle. He pulls on the wheel. Leans into the turn. Pushes down steadily on the accelerator. A tunnel of city shopdoors blurs by. Cars approach from the front and disappear out the back. A red light ahead. Pedestrians cross a road. Bodies weave into and around each other. Then separate out and away again. The taxi driver watches their movements from behind his windshield. Then a pause. A flashing green light. And he's pulled ahead. Further into the maze of concrete, glass and street. Losing himself around corners. Under bridges. Over speed bumps. More traffic lights. Past city trees. Clouds glide past above. Reflected below. Dogs bark in yards. Cats scuttle low. Birds fly high.
